Care & General Information
Leopard geckos are excellent beginner pet lizards because of their friendliness, hardiness, and general ease of care. They are also an easy size reptile to start with being that they are between 8" - 11" full-grown - so they are neither super small and fast nor large and intimidating. Their care, similarly, makes them an excellent pet as they do not require any special UV lighting or expensive equipment.
Leopards come in a huge variety of colors and patterns, also known as "morphs". These are listed as the prefix words before "Leopard Gecko" in our animal titles. Some of the most popular morphs are ones like Mack Snow, Albino, Tangerine, and Blizzard.
Baby Leopard Geckos can be skittish at times and can even give an (extremely cute) little squeal when trying to defend themselves against perceived predators. In our experience, this behavior almost always subsides over time as the Leopard becomes comfortable in its habitat.
As with other geckos, Leopards need a temperature gradient in their enclosure with one side being the "hot side" and the opposite side being the "cool side". This can be accomplished through the use of a heat mat with a regulating thermostat or a heat bulb in a dome. Both methods have their respective advantages and disadvantages.
Multiple leopard geckos can be kept together in specific circumstances. Typically this would be at least a 20-gallon long tank (approximately 30"x12"x16") and the multiple leopards being females. While males can get along with each other or with females it is a much higher risk as males can be territorial.
